No Fluff. No Fads. Just the Facts.

Q ~

Dear Alex,

I'm looking for some cosmetic tips for looking my best - on stage or off. I'm not big on makeup or trendy looks. Are there any tried and true 'rules' that always work? I'm really lost when it comes to how to make my eyes look their best!

Thanks!  - Better Than Basic

Hello, Better!

When it comes to cosmetics looks, it's best to rely on science instead of trends. Understanding the science of contrasting colors on the color wheel is the way to go.

Contrasting colors on the color wheel is a universal and scientific concept that works. For example, black and white are opposites, so next to each other, they make the other look its best. These tips are used in print ads, TV, and in movies to make men and women look their best without being too made-up. Start looking for these rules in art, commercials, and such.

To pick makeup colors for around your eyes, use the color wheel. Pick the contrasting color to your eye color. Sir Isaac Newton organized the seven basic colors into a wheel in the order that they appeared when he discovered that by refracting sunlight onto a wall, white light was made of seven visible colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. These colors follow a set pattern and have complementary and true contrast 'partners'. We want to focus on enhancing eye colors naturally.

To make the whites of your eyes look whiter, always use a true-black eyeliner. Make this work to it's maximum effect by applying it in the 'tight-line' technique.. This is when you put the liner right inito the lash line. This way, you don't have a thick, dramatic line on your lid, just a tight, black contrast right at your eye's edge. Male actors and models almost always have this on. It's hard to see, but it is making their eyes look clear, crisp, and bright. You can also use eye drops like Lumify. Pop a drop in just before hitting the shower. By the time you get out your eyes are white, bright, and clear! Pretty, no matter how much makeup you do or don't use.

To make the color of your iris pop, choose a color that is the exact contrast to the color of your iris. Apply a soft wash of color on the lid, just in line with your iris to make your eye color pop! For example, if your eyes are blue, the opposite is orange. Look for rust, pumpkin, and bronze colors. If your eyes are green, the opposite is red. Look for colors that are normally used for cheek-blush colors: pink, plum, and maroon. Avoid blue-reds as they can make dark circles in the eye area look worse. For brown eyes, use cool colors. These are the opposite of brown, which is a warm color. Think natural, cool colors you see in nature: water, moss, leaves. If your eyes are hazel, you can choose either the tricks for brown eyes or green eyes.

To complete your eye look, go for a good, strong brow. Properly defined brows are more of what completes the look than too much eye shadow. You can go to a brow pro for the first pass on proper shape and definition. Then get a good mirror and quality tweezers to keep things in shape going forward. Always tweeze your brows when you already have makeup on- like the end of the day before you wash your face. Otherwise, you might over-tweeze and ruin your great brow shape. Finally, apply a great mascara for a daily lash look, and consider false lashes or pro lash application for stage days.

Looking forward to you using your new knowledge!

Q ~

Dear Alex,

Please help me! I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill... but I can't stop picking when I get a pimple or an ingrown. What can I do instead?

Help!  -Ohh, Pick Me!

A ~

Hello, Ohh!

I completely understand how you feel. I've been in your position before and have helped many clients who struggle with the same issue. The first step towards recovery is acknowledging that you have a problem, and you've already taken that step, which is great!

To prevent the problem from arising in the first place, it's essential to maintain a good skincare routine. Remember that picking at your skin can cause open wounds, which take much longer to heal. Instead of breaking the skin, try using hot and damp compresses to slow the progression of bacteria blooming into a full-grown mountain! You can microwave a damp cloth for <30 seconds. Be very careful not to burn yourself! You can quickly reheat and apply the compress 3 to 4 times, several times a day. You might be surprised and wake up the next day, zit-free!

Products that will treat an ingrown or acne need to be effective and yet not too harsh on your skin. Avoid using products high in alcohol. That will only dry out your skin and leave behind red, flaky spots. I recommend Deep 6 from Bikini Kitty. It has only six ingredients. It is targeted and efficient, and can even help eliminate scarring, and can help brighten your skin where spots were before. Remember, it's crucial to choose the right treatment and avoid picking at your skin to prevent further damage.

Pick a winner, not your skin!
